Sunny
Side Cottage lies down a narrow lane at the edge of Near Sawrey.
One of three, it is semi detached, and built at the turn of the
century for the Graythwaite Estate. We have restored it into
a most delightful and spacious cottage.
From the timber
porch you step into the sitting room. Decorated and furnished in
bold period style this charming room has many original features.
Interesting panelled doors, inglenook with plate rails above, spice
cupboards, and the sofa and chairs drawn to the open fire. From the
sitting room you go to a central hall. Off this lies the kitchen,
newly fitted with oak units and every necessary item of cook ware
and, finally, downstairs is the dining room.
Upstairs are the bedrooms. The master bedroom is furnished
with inlaid Edwardian double bed. The second bedroom has twin beds
and is equally well furnished as with the whole house and has lovely
views of the few surrounding stone cottages with glimpses of the
lake and distant fell. The bathroom is well appointed with bath,
overhead shower, wash hand basin and WC. You approach the house
over a wide drive with grassed area to one side.
The drive swings around the house and forms a gravelled
patio area boarded by stone walls, overhanging trees and to the
very rear an acre of natural grass and wooded land giving homes
to varied wildlife, all combining to make a lovely area for children
to play and adults to barbecue and relax.
Sawrey is one of Cumbria's most famous and popular villages. Famed
mostly as being the home of author and artist Beatrix Potter, and
popular for its architecture, location and peace. The village lies
on the western side of Lake Windermere and is divided into two
pa rts,
Far and Near Sawrey. The names were given as if coming from nearby
Hawkshead, which lies a quarter of a mile away, along the road
skirting Esthwaite Water. Sawrey's two main attractions are Hill
Top, home of Beatrix Potter and now open to the public. The house
is small and groups are restricted in number, so it is best to
arrive early to avoid the queue.
At the entrance to the grounds is the National Trust
shop offering much Potterabillia. The second architectural attraction
is the famous 'Tower Bank Arms'. A wonderful old pub, now under
the care of the National Trust and here you can enjoy a good pint
and excellent bar food in a wonderful warm atmosphere. Far Sawrey
lies closest to Lake Windermere, and the road continues from the
village to the ferry where you can cross to Bowness, either with
car or as a pedestrian. The village is then really two small hamlets
with some rather nice buildings and farms set in good rambling
country. Claife Heights lies to the north.
Take an OS map, as this impressive outcrop is criss
crossed with many paths offering some strenuous and steep sections,
leading through woodland, passing a number of little tarns, Three
Dubs, Wise Ben and Moss Eccles, and the summit rewarding a magnificent
view of Lake Windermere, from where you can descend the eastern
slope and explore the shore line. Little Esthwaite Water offers
trout fishing and you can hire both tackle and boats. Hawkshead
is a must to visit, with wonderful architecture and lots of good
pubs. Sawrey, then, is a delightful village, central to the National
Park and a perfect base for a Lakeland holiday.
